History and Background

On 29 January 1964, a major fire at the Heavy Engineering Corporation plant in Ranchi caused extensive property loss. A commission headed by Justice B. Mukherjee cited sabotage as the cause of the fire and recommended a disciplined, uniformed force to provide fire and security coverage to Public Sector Undertakings.

The first Fire Wing unit, with a strength of 53 personnel, was inducted at FACT, Cochin, on 16 April 1970. The Government of India approved recruitment rules for various posts in the CISF Fire Service cadre in January 1991, and the cadre began functioning on 12 January 1991.

Professional fire services in India originated in major port cities, including Bombay and Calcutta, during the 19th century.
